Vintage Monumental Japanese Modernist Wood Fired Glazed Ikebana Vessel, Signed

$1,050.00

Japanese Modernist Ikebana Vessel

Mid-20th Century | Signed Artist

This monumental wood-fired ikebana vessel exemplifies the experimentation of postwar Japanese ceramic modernism. Its elongated, boat-like form—stretching 24.5 inches wide—showcases two signature techniques:

- Drip Glazing: Fluid mauve and slate blue glazes cascade like watercolor strokes

- Sgraffito: Incised patterns (now softened by firing) reveal the artist’s hand

Design Context

Created during Japan’s Mingei (folk art) revival movement (1950s-70s), this piece bridges traditional ikebana functionality and avant-garde abstraction.

Provenance

From the collection of a Japanese ikebana practitioner/collector (1960s-90s). The wear patterns—minor glaze crazing and kiln sediment—attest to decades of display use.

Details

- Materials: Wood-fired stoneware with ash deposits

-Dimensions: 24.5”W x 7”D x 7.25”

-Very heavy piece

- Markings: Illegible signature (base) suggesting workshop attribution

- Condition: very good vintage state; no restorations
