Norman Black - Surrealist Still Life with Egg Shells and Feathers, Signed (1965, Gouache on Board)

$725.00

Norman C. Black (British, 1920–1999)

Surrealist Still Life with Egg Shells and Feathers, 1965

Gouache on board

Signed lower right

10.5” H x 9.25” W (sight) | Framed: [dimensions if available]

Description:

This enigmatic gouache painting by Norman C. Black presents a surreal composition of fractured eggshells and two feathers—one delicately balanced upright—against a desolate, dreamlike landscape reminiscent of Yves Tanguy’s metaphysical vistas. Rendered with precise detail and subtle tonal gradations, the work exemplifies Black’s fusion of abstraction and surrealism with hints of realism.

Frame:

Housed in its original period frame, the artwork is float-mounted on a greenish-mustard velvet fabric backdrop, enhancing its ethereal quality. The frame features a bronze-gilt finish, with minor age-consistent scuffs and edge wear. A slight disturbance to the fabric’s nap appears on the right side. Please refer to the photos for details.

Provenance & Exhibitions:

Born in England, Black spent formative years in France (1929–1933) and later served in India during WWII, organizing entertainment for British troops. He studied at Bradford Art School (1948–1952), refining his distinctive surrealist-abstraction style. His works were exhibited at the Royal Academy, Brighton Museum, and galleries in Chicago, London, and Newquay.

Condition:

Good vintage condition; minor wear to frame and mounting as noted. Dated en verso.
