Richard Hood (1910-1995) - Casket with Candles Etching, Signed (Framed, c. 1943)

$470.00

Richard Hood (1910-1995) - Casket with Candles Etching, Signed (Framed, c. 1943). Hand pulled etching on wove cream paper. Long narrow casket with crucifix draped over the top. Six candles on stands bookend the casket. This is from Hood’s period at the WPA so most likely this was a comment on the soldiers dying in World War II. Interesting perspective because most WPA work looked to prop up the war, while this definitely has a more somber and dark tone in regards to war. Signed in pencil in the lower right corner. Housed under glass in black wood frame. New archival matte. In good condition with wear consistent with age and printing process. Please refer to photos for details. The studio has a total of 3 so slight variations in tone might be different than photo.

Size: 16 x 20 in

Richard Hood was a WPA artist primarily known for printmaking. Hood was also involved in the Federal Art Project, the Philadelphia College of Art, and the American Color Print Society. From 1951-1982, Hood was a professor at the Philadelphia College of Art. From 1956-1983, Hood was the President of the Color Print Society. Richard Hood is held in many major institutions and museums nationwide including: MOMA, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Smithsonian institute, Metropolitan Museum of Art, etc.
