About the Artist

Leonid Gechtoff was born in Odessa, Ukraine in 1883. His artistic journey took him from Cairo to Southeast Asia before settling in Philadelphia in 1921, where he developed his distinctive style merging Russian Expressionism with American modernist influences. His works are in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

The Painting

This 1935 seascape captures Gechtoff's dynamic approach to maritime subjects:

- Vigorous impasto brushwork creates textured wave movement

- A sophisticated palette blending deep blues with subtle pink highlights

- Dramatic contrast between foamy crests and dark water

Special Features

- Signed and dated "Gechtoff 1935" lower right

- Original board in good condition

- Rare pink tonal accents in the waves

- Age-appropriate wear along the edges (does not affect the composition)

- Unrestored, with a rich patina – testament to its authenticity
