Antique French Folk Art Wooden Screw – Late 18th/Early 19th Century

$725.00

Antique French Folk Art Wooden Screw – Late 18th/Early 19th Century

A hand-carved hardwood screw, likely repurposed from an early wine press or woodworking vise, displaying characteristic wear from decades of functional use. The piece shows skilled vernacular craftsmanship in its precisely cut spiral threading, though one side of the top thread exhibits significant wear, suggesting repeated mechanical friction in its original application.

The wood surface reveals a deep, variegated patina with natural checking and subtle polish from handling. The absence of metal components indicates an all-wood construction method typical of pre-industrial tools. While structurally intact, the asymmetrical wear pattern and softened edges testify to its working history.

This artifact represents an increasingly rare survival of traditional woodcraft techniques, its utilitarian form now elevated to sculptural object. The piece remains in stable, unrestored condition with all wear patterns preserved.

Dimensions: 19" H × 3.5" diameter

Material: Solid hardwood (oak or similar)

Condition: Unrestored; one-sided thread wear as shown; stable with age-appropriate surface checking
